2004 Description: (click here for 2005/2006)

For those focused directly on competition, the 749R is the ideal solution. It is a perfect racing machine, with a Testastretta series engine and chassis specifically developed to ensure top competitiveness on the racetrack. The considerable use of special materials, from magnesium to carbon fiber to titanium, make this motorcycle extra-light and extremely effective.

Every 749R is "signed" with a numbered silver plate on the steering head, which adds yet another exclusive touch to one of the most original bikes on the current worldwide motorcycling scene. The front suspension is also very high quality: an Öhlins upside-down fork with tubing 43 millimeters in diameter, with titanium nitride treatment for smoother sliding. In addition to being fully adjustable, the fork has a special foot to allow radial fastening of the brake calipers.

The twin-cylinder of the Testastretta series was also developed to encourage the racing use of the 749R. The 118 HP at 10,250 rpm, and 8.31 kgm at 8,250 rpm are the result of a long process that begins with shortening the stroke and increasing the bore. The new slipper clutch, which has been specifically developed for racing use, stops the rear wheel locking up under extreme braking conditions typical of track riding. Also made of titanium are the connecting rods, while the head covers are made of magnesium and the belt covers are carbon fiber, equipped with forced ventilation to aid in cooling.

The use of titanium in the production of the valves represents a totally new innovation for Ducati motorcycles. In fact, the 749R is the first Ducati ever to make use of such technology. Titanium valves reduce weight and the mass of moving parts significantly, resulting in a reduction of reciprocating force and stress on the valve train. Valves of lower mass being actuated by the same profile cam results in higher valve-acceleration and therefore safely permits the use of a cam using a competition profile.

2005 & 2006 Descriptions:

A SPORTS BIKE WITHOUT COMPROMISE. The 749R, designed to race in the World Supersport Championship, is an outstanding racing machine. It features the most powerful mid-size Testastretta engine produced by Ducati together with a state-of-the-art chassis set up, both developed specifically for top track performance.

The 749R is driven by a mighty twin-cylinder Testastretta engine created especially for racing. The 121 hp at 10,500 rpm has been achieved through full race tuning, and
shortening the piston stroke while increasing the bore to 94 mm, up from the 90 mm of the 749 and 749s, thus enabling the engine to run at higher rpm. The slipper clutch is also racing derived and prevents the rear wheel from locking during track style downshifting and heavy engine deceleration.

This Testastretta twin-cylinder engine has been created using the best materials: titanium valves, valve retaining collets and connecting rods, magnesium head covers and carbon fiber belt covers that feature a ventilation system to enhance belt cooling. The feather-weight crankshaft and high resistance aluminum alloy pistons complete the array of top notch components.

One of the unique features of this model is the rear suspension linkage, with flat rising
rate as used on competition Ducatis, that is suited to extreme track use and a single-seat set up. The lower rising rate produces linear performance throughout the stroke with less rigidity at high ranges, typical of high-speed cornering experienced on the track. The suspension works in partnership with a fully adjustable Öhlins rear shock absorber, with a shorter stroke than in the standard version (down from 71 to 56 mm) and with a heavier spring, designed especially for this motorcycle and its unique rear suspension.

This model is exclusively available as a single-seater and is finished off with a numbered silver plate on the top yoke.

Ducati chose the renowned Valencia racetrack in Spain as the proving ground for the 749R's first on-track tests and 2004 Supersport Team Ducati Breil launch. From February 22nd to 24th Testastretta horsepower will be unleashed in Valencia, while the following week will witness the opening of the 2004 World Superbike and Supersport Championships.

The new 749R completes the Ducati Superbike range and marks Ducati's return to the World Supersport championship. The bikes that take part in this championship are purely derived from production models. Very few modifications to the chassis and engine are allowed. The 749R was designed with a single purpose: to race on the track. It's a true racing bike and, with a street legal homologation and plate, it can serve up thrills off-track as well.

Once again it is the technology that makes all the difference, the high quality standard of each individual component, and the ability to transfer racing know-how to a bike destined for the public. Passion and a confidence-inspiring-ride are in the 749R DNA.

The 749R needs no introduction: the twin-cylinder short-stroke Testastretta engine (to reach higher revs) is filled with racing components: from the deep sump to the slipper clutch, from titanium valves to the timing belt cooling system, the 749R achieves maximum performance with no loss of reliability.

Taking a look at the rest of the bike, things only get better: full carbon fiber fairing, aluminum forged wheel rims, radial front brake calipers and a brand new rear swingarm, very similar to that found on the 999R race bike which dominated the World Superbike championship: a light and stiff double-sided structure welded from cast and pressed aluminum parts.

The 749R, born to race in the World Supersport championship, will be available at your Ducati Dealer, beginning the end of February, 2004.
